Welcome To DISNEY STUDIO (WDW)

This park started out as the MGM Studios and then was annexed as Disney’s MGM Studios.  A little bird told me that the deal with MGM is not being renewed and the name changed yet again to Disney Studios.  Whatever.

To be honest, this is my least favorite park. I lived in Los Angeles for 12 years.  I’ve been to Universal Studios and it’s better.  The vast majority of the attractions in this park are shows and exhibits.  The only up side are 3 major thrill rides and an after dark visual extravaganza.  Teens will defiantly like the thrill rides and find some fun shopping.  Kids will like the Muppets, Dave and other Disney TV tie-in exhibits.  This is another ½ day park unless stunt shows start your motor.

ALTERNATATE TRANSPERTATION

If you are staying at an Epcot resort (including the Swan or Dolphin) you can ride the Friendship boat to the park.  This is a nice, relaxing alternative to cars or buses.

THE MYSTERY OF THE ICON CONFUSION

All Disney Parks have a central icon in their design.  The Magic Kingdom has Cinderella’s castle, Animal Kingdom has the Tree of Life and Epcot has Spaceship Earth.  The Studios has Graummans Chinese Theatre.  Problem is it is covered from view by a gigantic Mickey’s sorcerers apprentice hat.  This was added as a yearly promotional gimmick similar in nature to the Mickey hand and wand on the side of Spaceship Earth that ended up staying.  I hate this hat.  Not because I hate Mickey because I LOVE Mickey but the hat has got to go.  Graumanns Chinese should be seen.  Its bad enough that in real life, its name is now Mann’s Chinese.  Disney should not mess with perfection.  Let us see Graumanns as the icon it was meant to be.

Victoria & Albert's Chefs Table - Grand Floridian (2007)

I managed to snag ressies for Chef’s Table at Victoria & Albert's!  There is only one table available per night.  I was sooo happy!  Catwoman and I are huge foodies and I knew this would be a special treat.  When you check in, you let them know you are there for Chefs Table.  They send your server to escort you through the dining room and into to the kitchen.  The server then announces that a guest is coming through to alert the staff.

Jack & Sherry were our servers and they are also a married couple.  Once you go through the kitchen, you find there is a dining room “set”.  The dining room is a paneled “room” that exists like a shoe box was set on its side across from the kitchen.  So you have 3 paneled walls, a table, sideboard and one wall is open into the kitchen.  A low wrought iron fence separates you from the kitchen.  You are told that the only rule is that you can not leave the table alone.  You must alert your server to escort you through the kitchen.  So if you are going to the ladies room, they take you through the kitchen and restaurant then wait for you at the podium.  When you return, they return you to your seat.

Here is a view of our table from my chair:

The dome covers the butter, there is salt with a spoon above it and my glass of champagne.  Yes we did have all the wine pairings and we tried but sadly had to leave some wine behind.  That killed me.

This is what you would see if you left the table for the little boys/girls room and returned:

I sat at the chair farthest away, Catwoman at the closest chair.  You can see that we still have 2 wines.  This was at the end of the meal.  I know I polished off the sweet wine (amber colored) before we left.

If you were sitting at the table and then turned to your left, you would see the sideboard.  The exit to the kitchen it to the right of the picture:

Your server has the extra glasses, condiments, etc here.

So we are seated and once the rules are explained by Jack, we are served our amouse bouche.

Top Left: Deviled Quail Egg with Iranian Osetra Caviar – the little dots are crème fraiche with a chive.  The best way to eat this is just to drag it through the crème and eat it.  A quail egg is small and does not taste very different from a chicken egg.  The white is a little firmer and the yolk is a little sharper.

Top Right: Seared Raw Yellow Fin Tuna with Hijiki Salad.  The tuna is sitting on a slab of pink salt.  I cut it in half, made sure it sat full on the salt rock, then drug it through the soy/light Cajun dots and had some of the greens on the fork as well.  Excellent!  The tuna was tender and just melted in your mouth.  The light salt with the slight tang from the sauce was just perfect.

Bottom Left: Lobster Sausage.  A piece of poached lobster with a small amount of binder.  Delicate but flavorful.  You can get this on your fork in one bite.

Bottom Right: Lobster Bisque.  Just sip out of the cup.  So creamy and smooth with full lobster flavor.

These small bites set the stage for things to come.  The wine for the Amuse Bouche was Heidsieck Monopole “Blue Top” Brut Champagne NV (no vintage)

So now we are off to the first course.  Chef Scott brought us his “star” dish.  It was featured on the cover of a food magazine.  He gave me a copy of the magazine.  He was very proud.  He talked to us for a bit about his kitchen and his food.  The kitchen was so spotless you could eat off the floor.

Seared Colorado Buffalo Tenderloin, Braised Fennel, Radishes and Satsuma Tangerine Vinaigrette with Cantina Del Taburno Falanghina, Campania 2005
The buffalo was tender, juicy and not the least bit gamey.  The citrus tang paired with the salt from the meat and the sharpness of the vege was perfect.

Now this next dish was not on the menu.  It was an extra little thing that Chef Scott put together for us.

King Crab Leg with citrus cream sauce, asparagus salad and crab cake with spring greens and lime reduction
Ooo, the crab was soooo sweet and paired with the citrus, the tender (but not mushy) asparagus, the crab cake was near all crab with very little filler and the acid from the lime paired with in marvelously.  The wine (which I didn’t have written down) was light but full bodied.

Now we started talking with Joe.  He was chopping something brown on the board directly across from us.  Then he dumped pounds and pounds of butter into a HUGE kitchenaid mixer that had to stand on the floor instead of the counter due to its size.  Then it hit me.  The brown bits he was adding to the butter was TRUFFLES!  I can’t even wrap my head around home much money those truffles cost.  Catwoman got up to look and the truffle butter looked like chocolate chip cookie batter.  The truffles were that noticeable.

Washington State Salmon with Mustard Greens, Sauce Soubise, and Ramp Pesto with Pere & Fils Christian Moreau Chablis 2004
The salmon was soft with a crunch from a bit of skin and the creamy sauce.  Just wonderful.  Not cooked too much so that it was dry.  We still had lots of room for our next course.

Poulet Rouge (Red Chicken) with Wild Mushroom Ragout and truffled Egg with Toad Hall Pinot Noir Dijon Clones, Carneros 2003
This is a red chicken with a wild mushroom selection on top.  The earthiness of the mushrooms with the full flavor of the red chicken (the flesh is white but the skin is red as are the chickens feathers).  They are from France.  However the BEST bit thus far in this amazing dinner was the egg!  It was like a light egg soufflé but not as puffy and more creamy with truffles inside a cleaned egg shell.  It was AMAZING!

Now at this point, Catwoman calls Racer X who happens to be in Vegas right now eating a truffle and ham pizza over at the Venician.  We know we still had better food.

At this point I had to take a trip to the Ladies so I was escorted out and I hoped that they didn’t start the next course without me.  After washing hands and pocketing a wee soap it’s back for the next course.

Kurobuta Pork Tenderloin and Pork Belly with Florida Corn and Cherry Jus with Domain Vencent Guradin Santenay 1er Cru “la Maladiere” 2004
The pork was juicy, earthy and sweet with the cherry.  It was hearty but not overpowering.  The selections have all been so stellar there has just not been a bad one in site.

We now start talking to Carrie who has Fois Gras and egg cup prep.  I love fois gras so much but since it is so expensive I’ve been afraid to buy some since I thought I would mess up.  She gives us some tips as she is cutting the block of fois gras on how to cook it, not to overcook it, etc. and is washing out the egg shells for the mousse.  She was soooo helpful and a little chatting with us didn’t slow her down a bit.

Pen Roasted Foie Gras and Fuji Apple Tart with Mostarda de Cremona with Royal Tokaji Azsu 5 Puttonyos Mad Tokaj-Hegyalia 2000
OMYGOD!  I have died and gone to heaven.  For me heaven is filled with oysters and Fois Gras.  I LOVE THIS STUFF!  I can eat it every day.  I’d be as big as a house but I wouldn’t care because in heaven you can eat whatever you want and not gain any weight.  It is so creamy and lovely and rich and the bit of char with the  sweet apple.  I am hard pressed to name this of the truffle egg mousse the best.

Next is the “Missing Man” – I guess we sucked this down so fast that I didn’t get a picture or the picture didn’t turn out or, face it, I was too drunk to think about taking a picture.  My writing is getting big and sloppy at this point.  I do make a remark after another trip to the Ladies that there was a woman in the next stall, doing her business and talking on the cell phone saying something about “it’s so slow”.  Ummm, it’s a leisurely relaxed meal!  Honestly people, on phone etiquette, I really don’t want to listen to you piddle in the background while I am talking to you.  HANG UP YOU COW!.  OK, on to the next dish.  It was:

Japanese “Wagyu” Strip Loin (This is Kobe Beef) and Beef Short Ribs with Cauliflower Puree with Sarget de Gruaud-LaRose, Saint Julian 2003

”Wagyu” is the type of cow used to make Kobe beef.  You can only call it Kobe if it comes from Wagyu cows in Japan using Kobe methods.  If you import cows (which is hard to do) and make your own Kobe you have to call it Wagyu.  Just like Champagne technically is ONLY made from champagne grapes grown in the champagne region of France.  Everything else is Sparkling Wine but we call it champagne anyway.  I have don a lot of reading on Kobe/Wagyu beef and Kobe experts have even liked the flavor of this better.  It is still hella expensive and I will say was just WONDERFUL!  The “crack” when you bit into it with the thin char of fat, the creamy texture, the juicy beef bloody goodness, mmmmm.  BTW – if you like your meat burned, skip this because I doubt any self-respecting chef will ruin a piece of pricey meat for you to cook it into shoe leather.  This was meant to be served medium rare.  If you don’t like that, they will gladly serve you something else.  It’s like people that want to put soda in their 20 year old scotch.  I want to kick them with my pointy Princess shoe but that is another story.

Here is a selection of wine that we still had at the end of the meal.  I know we aren’t there yet but this is still what we had to finish.

Here is the cheese course.  I like cheese but I admit I am more a bland ‘Merican cheese kinda girl.  Jack, Swiss, Brie, basic cheese, nothing that smells like feet.  The cheeses listed were Comte Saint Antoine, Pierre Robert, Fog Lights Stuffed Pear and Flixer. I am also allergic to Blue Cheese so those are omitted from the menu.  I will refer to the internet for descriptions of these cheeses

Comte Saint Antoine – (This is the thick hard looking yellow cheese) Comté is made from the raw milk of red and white Montbeliard cows in the Jura Mountains of France in Franche-Comté. Small, cooperative dairies known as "fruitières” produce the cheese year-round; our Comté Fort Saint Antoine is hand-picked and aged for more than 15 months. Comté is one of the most popular cheeses in France, and it is claimed that there are more than 83 distinct flavors in Comté, including apricot, chocolate, butter, cream, and grilled bread. Our Fort Saint Antoine has a rich, buttery flavor with hints of hazelnuts and pineapple. Comté is a wonderful pair for a wide variety of wine styles

Pierre Robert – (this reminds me of really creamy brie.  No feet here.  Nearest US taste is Cowgirl Creamery’s Mt. Tam cheese) Pierre Robert is a decadent triple-crème-style cheese from Seine-et-Marne. When Robert Rouzaire and his friend Pierre began to tire of their Brillat-Savarin, inspiration struck. They began aging the same triple-crème longer in their caves, enabling it to further develop its flavor and become even more meltingly rich in texture. They named their new success Pierre-Robert, for obvious reasons. With a whimsical boulder ("Pierre" means rock) adorning its snow-white rind, Pierre-Robert appeals to anyone craving pure and utter decadence. Buttery, smooth, and mild, this cheese ought to be eaten spread on bread or even graham crackers. Pair this cheese with Champage, Muscat, or a hearty Stout. One piece weighs approximately 1 Pound.

Fog Lights is a local (CA) and earthy, ash covered goat cheese.  The dark circle was a fig that had the cheese inside.

Flixer - (FLICK-ser – this one was so good I ate it like a piggy and it is not in the picture): Flixer is a very rare and delicious cheese is made by only one cheesemaker in Switzerland. It has chestnut and savory flavors that melt into a creamy aftertaste

COFFEE.  I usually don’t drink coffee because (a) I like coffee but it doesn’t like me and (b) I really don’t want the mean coffee monkey on my back, beating me on the head with foot long cocoa beans each morning with renewed vigor.  A slave to a monkey and a bean lest my head ache, my mouth dry up and I get all jittery.  Sounds like withdrawl from crack thank you very much and I will pass. However in this case I have probably downed at least 1 ¼ bottles of wine all on my own so I need some caffine to get me stumbling to the bus awake.  Then there will be a ton of water I need to drink as well.

I was hoping for the cool coffee science experiment type bong that they use in the dining room but here it was just never ending cups and an assortment of sugar.

There were lumps of white sugar, lumps of brown as well as Nutrasweet in the blue and Splenda in the yellow.  No pink sweet and low.  I used Splenda.  Less calories.  LOLOLOLOLOLOL – OK wipe your eyes.  I know, it’s like rolling into Ghirardelli’s, ordering the Earthquake sundae and a diet coke.  I mock those people so feel free to mock away.  The gravy boat in the background was the soufflé sauce.  More on that later.

Miniature Chocolate Pyramid with strawberries and toffee cookie, Hawaiian Kona Coffee Souffle, and Orange Chocolate Napoleon with Cockburns 10 year old Tawny Porto.

Now my tastes have changed since I was little and I am not really a huge chocolate person.  The chocolate pyramid was dusted with cocoa powder.  Crisp on the outside, smooth on the inside.  I liked it but Catwoman polished it off since it was way too much chocolate for me.  The Kona Coffee Souffle was really remarkable.  Souffles are solid on the outside and gooey on the inside.  When served it is split open and a a sauce is poured in.  It is served on the side so you can control the amount.  I don’t recall what the sauce was and I was too bloated or drunk or both to write it down.  Needless to say, it was wonderful and I finished it.  The last was thin sheets of dark chocolate with orange chocolate mousse between the layers with an orange sauce.  I am weird but I really don’t like the chocolate/orange flavor combo.  Maybe it was a medicine flashback to childhood (the reason I can’t eat cherry lifesavers anymore.  They remind me too much of sucrets.)  I ate some.  It was nice but gave most of it to Catwoman.

Just let me say that I went to BevMo today and got a bottle of this port.  I am drinking it now.  It’s still really yummy.

Grand Marnier Souffle with Madagascar Vanilla Ice Cream
This was a second dessert that was brought out to Catwoman.  Actually it went to me first but I gave it to her telling them that while I am sure it is amazing I just don’t prefer those particular flavor combos.  Catwoman said is was amazingly lovely and it did come with a chocolate bourbon sauce.

This was my second dessert.  Ummm, I have no idea why the picture is at this angle.  I will blame it on a large amount of alcohol.

Raspberry Mousse with raspberry sorbet and white chocolate pyramid with mango chutney.  This was more my speed.  Chocolate with raspberry is great and the fact that there is more fruit than chocolate is even better.  The mousse was light, creamy and not overly sweet or cloying.  It was wrapped with a ribbon of chocolate and accompanied by a cookie and the tart sorbet.  I assure you that is not corn on the plate, it is pieces of mango in a sauce next to a wee pyramid of white chocolate (which really isn’t chocolate at all.  White “chocolate” is a confection and has no cocoa in it.), a little edible gold leaf and an edible violet.  Yes I ate the flower and would have eaten it even if I wasn’t drunk.

This meal was pricey.  Really pricey.  I believe near $200 a person without tip pricey.  HOWEVER, it is the best food in the park.  One of the best restaurants in the nation and Catwoman and I have eaten at quite a few including Masa’s, Nobu, Chez Paniesse and The French Laundry to name a few so we know our gourmet food.  This was top drawer.  Chef Scott is on of the culinary Gods of our time.  I saved money separate just for this experience and it was worth every cent.  If you are adventurous, enjoy the best food and wine and want a wonderful, special dining experience – this is it.  There is nothing better.  This is why when I grade other restaurants in the park, I don’t use V&A as a means of comparison in grading.  It would throw the curve.  I always consider it an A+ in its own little Universe, able to compete with the best there is nationwide.

Akershus - Epcot/Norway

Overall Rating = B+
NOISE LEVEL – Moderate. The noise was not bad at all. You are in a "castle" type building and it can be a bit echoey.
SERVICE – Excellent.  Very attentive and the servers are also more than happy to tell you all about their lives in Norway.  They are polite to a fault and a great deal of fun as well.
KIDS – A moderate range of kids (some of the food may be too "weird" for American kids unless you go to the breakfast buffet where 75% of the fare is standard Disney bacon, eggs and waffles.). No major meltdowns. All well behaved when we were there.
ATMOSPHERE – This has got to be the coolest (both in decor and temperature) building in EPCOT. It reminds me of a Viking dining hall. Uber neato!
COST - Moderate $$

Well this was my second Princess Lunch at Akerhaus.  In my opinion this is some of the best food in the World.  I was dubious at first but I am sooo won over.  I keep going back even if I have to brave the Princess Parade.  I gave Catwoman a heads up before we started so she knew what she was in for.

We were in the first group to be seated and were shown to a “deuce”, that is restaurant talk for a table for two.  It makes sense but what doesn’t make sense is that the table is wee.  You figure both of you with the buffet will have 2 plates each (1 buffet plate, 1 entrée plate) and then there are the water glasses and the wine glasses and your camera and trip report book and here comes the dessert.  You see what I mean.  It is TOO SMALL but we perervere.

So first a trip to the buffet.  I did this in 3 sections and will try to point out items I can remember:

Pickled cucumbers, egg salad with strips of ham, cubes of cheese
Various cold cut meats, smoked salmon (sooooo yummy), smoked herring (soooo goood), hard boiled eggs stuffed with a shrimp mousse mixture

Here is my selection from the buffet.  Catwoman threatened to claw my eyes out if I stuck my camera over her food one more time.
Starting at the top is leftse (think rolled potato bread) with a dollop of homemade mayo, 2 balls of butter, 2 slices of smoked goat cheese (the dark triangles) which scared me but are now my favorite things.  They taste like caramel – swear to God!, cubed cheese, smoked herring, shrimp hard boiled egg, egg salad, braised cabbage, smoked salmon - A

Now the entrees:
I again went for the Pan-Seared Trout - Served with stewed red cabbage, apples, bacon and garnished with a roasted onion and beet jam.  The trout was really good.  Not quite as good as last time but you are comparing an A with an A-.  Perhaps it was the different plating and not enough cabbage that put me off.  It was still enjoyable and now I am trying to figure out for next time to do another lunch or dinner.
Catwoman went for the Traditional Kjottkaker - with a cauliflower, garlic, cheese infused mashed potato, and a red wine beet sauce.  The best way I can think to descibe this dish is Norwegian meatloaf.  Everything about this dish was wonderful.  The vegetables were cooked perfectly, the mash was amazing and the meatloaf (for want of a better word) was soft, flavourful, and was amazing with the beet sauce.  I hate beets but I tasted this and it was SOO GOOOOD!
Soup and Sandwich: A Jarlsberg Cheese and Leek Soup paired with Pan Seared Salmon served open face on toasted multigrain bread, lettuce, tomato and topped with a roasted garlic caper mayonnaise.

I was too slow and my table mates chowed their way through this before I could get a clear picture. They said the salmon was sooo moist and flavorful and the soup beat the PANTS off the cheddar cheese soup in Canada. Grade: A

Rice Cream with Strawberries and sauce (My FAV!!), Chocolate Mousse finished with a chocolate waffle and chocolate shavings (MUCH better than France - lighter and fluffier) and a Lingonberry Tart topped with an oatmeal streusel (A nice little soft cookie) Grade: A

UPDATE 2010:
The sun shone brightly, though the temps were still low not getting past a high of 54 but I did not care, I was going to eat in my favorite place in Epcot - Akershus. In my 7 trips to the World, I have eaten here 6. I started out when they were an obscure out of the way eatery to its present condition as a center of Princess Pandemonium. It's meet that the word "demon" is hidden inside pandemonium because you really feel like you have entered the 9th ring of hell when you enter Norway now.

The courtyard is usually a sea of squealing, screaming, hyper, cranky children and tired, exasperated, crackberry addict adults who are either texting madly in an effort to escape or just starting blankly into space, their ears not even registering the din.

But I wait my turn because I am dying for that wonderful food. Once my name is called, I enter the castle. Belle is there in her ball gown taking pictures. I go straight to the host and tell him "Look, can you seat me now? I don't need a picture." He looks at me confused "It's included in the price." I look at him with pity "I'm not here for the Princesses, I'm here for the food. Besides what these ladies are doing is my job back home in a way so I don't need to stand on que for that." Now he is confused but he takes me to a table. A nice 4-top RIGHT BY THE BUFFET!!! OK, I'm good.

My server comes over, a lovely girl and gives me the menu. I freeze in horror. Where is my food? I know there is food on the menu but the lunch menu is now infested with American crap. WHERE IS THE NORWEGIAN FOOD?! Where is the wonderful trout with stewed cabbage and beet jam? Where is the amazing open-faced salmon sandwich with a cup of Jarlsberg cheese & leek soup?! They were on Deb's site for January?!

Before you could get one of the two items I mentioned above or the Kjottkaker (kind of like Norwegian meatloaf) and a pasta dish.

NOW you can have the Kjottkaker (the only old item left on the menu) or
* Salmon Burger on a toasted Onion Roll with choice of winter bisque or veggie soup
* Open Faced Chicken Sandwich on Sourdough with tomato, arugula, mushroom vinaigrette, jarlsberg and lingonberry mayo served with choice of winter bisque or veggie soup
* Grilled venison sausage over white bean stew with bacon, carrots and potatoes
*Grilled veggie-stuffed pasta with sauteed veggies, tomato truffle broth and parm
* Sauteed chicken breast with vegetable barley risotto

Kids options are Grilled chicken breast, cheese raviolli, cheese pizza or hot dog with corn.

whee.

I am sooooooo disappointed. They have Americanized the menu to appeal to the Princess hoards. There was NOTHING WRONG WITH TROUT! They serve trout all over the US. i am bummed. My world has just fallen around my ears. I can't decide what to order because I want Norwegian food. I can't go to the buffet until I decide so I pick the chicken sandwich.

Now I can bask in the glory that is the buffet!

OK, let's start at 11:00 on the plate and travel clockwise.
*cavier with capers & onions
*smoked goat cheese (grab these brown thin slices - they taste like CARAMEL! And are just amazing!)
* lox
* Peel & eat shrimp
* Grain roll
* Smoked salmon
* Smoked mackerel (the white fish with the pepper on it)
* Herring 2 ways - one looks straight, the other has a tomato based sauce
* asparagus
* Beet & sliced apple salad
* cube cheese
* Salami

I went back for seconds on the Herring (both kinds), the salmon and the mackerel. Soooooo good!
Then I get my sandwich:

The soup was AMAZING and I ate all of it! I wasn't into the potatoes since I was trying to cut as many excessive carbs as I could. The sandwich... ahh yes. Let's look at that closer shall we?

It sure is purty but ummm, how in tarnation am I suppose to eat that?! That sandwich is 2 boy howdy feet high! So I picked off the bacon and ate that, then cut it in half but that is a lot of chicken and now I am a little full. The chicken was good but not exceptional. It was chicken.

The Princesses came through and we had Aurora (wrong color dress, I know I need to stop beating the dead horse about it), Cindy, Snow and Ariel. All of the Princesses were lovely, very nice, took pictures with me, chatted with me about Disney and my own "princess type job".

The dessert plate had changed as well but I didn't care because there was my beloved rice cream!
So in the bottom left we have the yummy strawberry rice cream, next to it is their new (to me anyway) chocolate mousse, up top on the left is a new dessert. It is an apple tart. Patry filled with apples and served with vanilla ice cream next to it and caramel sauce. I was so full. I ate the apples out of the shell with the ice cream, ate half the mousse and all of the rice.

All of the selections were yummy I was just about to burst, like that guy in the restaurant in Monty Pythons "The Meaning of Life".

I did get the most Norwegian aquavit drink - Fjellbekk (Mountain Stream) that also had vodka, sprite ad lime in it. Very refreshing. They put my left over drink in a mickey kids to-go cup. YAY ME!

While I was a bit bummed about the food changed, they did tell me that the trout is now on the dinner menu so next time I will have to decide if I suck it up and do lunch or change to dinner.

The food is just too good to pass up even if I have to battle hoard of kids and Princesses to get to it!

Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle Station - Magic Kingdom

Now the last 2 times I have been to MK, this place has been closed.  That was in February and October.  But now in April, it is open.  I think it is pretty much catch as catch can.

I am glad that we did find it open though.  The counter service here was nice and that is saying something.  Food in the Magic Kingdom and at Disneyland as well has never been stellar.

Catwoman had the Vegetable Noodle Bowl with Tofu $6.80

I had the Chicken Noodle Bowl with broth $6.80

Both of these were surprisingly good.  The vegetables in both were light, crisp and cooked well.  The chicken wasn’t greasy, the tofu wasn’t mushy or bland.  There was a tray of condiments so you could add your own soy sauce, hot mustard or sweet and sour.  It was a nice change from hamburgers, hot dogs and ice cream.

“The best way to deal with these dishes is to treat them like Vietnamese Pho.  Add sweet chilli hot sauce, lime and a little soy sauce.  This adds a little spice without being overpowering and brings out the flavors more.

Also they need a better variety of desserts preferably something with an Asian flair like a Ginger Cake or Mochi.  The pre-packaged chocolate cake they serve is a heart attack waiting to happen.  Get this – that little cake is technically TWO SERVINGS and is 440 calories for both servings.  However the frosting makes up THREE TIMES the calories of the cake.  So I just scrapped the frosting off and ate the cake.  The cake by itself without the processed lard topping was actually good.”

Snacks & Drinks Around The World

Here are a few snacks that we had that I felt were worth commenting on:

ANIMAL KINGDOM
Bar Next To Tuskers
Pina Colada – This is a good place to get a drink, grab a table and watch the acrobats.  The only issue is that most of their frozen drinks are from machines or not very fresh.  I am spoiled since I have a tiki bar by me that makes their drinks with only premium boze, fresh squeezed juice and no mixes.  It was OK but next time I will have a beer.  That way you always know what you are getting.

The Royal Anandapur Tea Company - This is a GEM of a place if you like real tea vs. Lipton.  They have wonderful loose blends that they make into tea bags right there. They also have coffee drinks as well. If you like tea PLEASE check this out! It is on the way to Everest on the right hand side. It also has lovely seating areas. I would hate this to go away because people don't come.

When we were there, most people seemed to be ignorant about the different types of tea. I have had the following on various visits:
Silver Needle - One of China's best white teas. Brews at a pale yellow/reddish liquor and has a delicately sweet flavor.
Keteada - grown at a high elevation in Central Africa, this wonderful bold black tea is sure to please the palate.
China Green Jasmine - Classic scented green tea from Fouzou Province with jasmine flowers.
UPDATE 2010: Roobios Vanilla - This yummy tea with a smooth vanilla taste is perfect for a cold day.  I had wanted to taste their Dragon and Chai teas but they were out.  This one was recommended by the cast member and is lovely.

When we were there, most people just asked the CMs for "tea" or "hot tea" and were given most probably their mild house blend. When we asked for "Silver Needle" or "China Jasmine", first they just stared and then broke out into smiles figuring out that we were asking for SPECIFIC teas and were overjoyed.

I can't sing the praises of this enough. Also if you are one of these people from Starbucks - "I want a low fat, soy, double shot, dolce vente latte with hazelnut" - go home. I know - harsh - but true. I had this lady in front of me that was like this: "I want a grande capp with chocolate syrup". The guy stared at her like she was from Mars and said "You want a Mocha?" which is what she asked for and she says "do you have chocolate syrup that I can put in AFTER" and he tells her "no" and I just want to hit her in the head with a lemur and feed her to the Yeti because I get that way when confronted with pretentious coffee bar freaks. Don't be one of these people. Have the wonderful teas. Enough said. GO HERE!

Yak & Yeti (Yak Attack) - UPDATE 2010
This is soooo yummmy.  It is a mango daiquiri with extra rum and a berry swirl.  Go into the bar and get one.  You can get them at the "adult beverage counter" around the corner from the counter service food outside the restaurant but these are better.  I know, I tried both.

MAGIC KINGDOM:
Dole Whips:  I love these but only with the pineapple / vanilla swirl.  Disneyland has Dole Whips as well BUT they only have the straight pineapple, no pineapple/vanilla swirl and that is the only one worth having.  I think the pineapple straight is a bit too tart and the vanilla mellows this out.  This is one of the few snacks I inhale so fast I get brain freeze.  The other good thing is you can now use a SNACK CREDIT for one if you are on Disney Dining!

Mickey Bar:  I’m not fan.  I think they are OK but not my favorite.  To me there is nothing to separate it from any Eskimo Pie aside from its shape like Mickeys head.
Mickey Ice Cream Sandwich: Now we’re talking.  I really like these but I am a pushover for any kind of ice cream sandwich even when the cookies is all soft and bendy like 99% of them are.  The problem is they are limited to only a few places.  I know Disney Studios has them and Magic Kingdom but this is about it that I have found.
Popcorn:  Is Evil.  It tempts you with its smell, it makes you think how happy you would be if you had some so you break down and buy it.  Then you discover that Mickey and his Uber Larger salt shaker was already there.  No real butter, just artificial butter flavored solids (which I am sure has 50,000 chemicals in it).  The popcorn is a bit chewy, VERY salty and just not worth it once you were drawn to it’s siren song and found yourself wrecked upon the rocks.

THE BAR @ THE POLY:
Pineapple Mohito – Nice.  It was not as refreshing as a regular Mohito and wasn’t too sweet.  A nice afternoon by the pool drink - $7.00
Pina CoLava – Amazing!  It is a Pina Colada with Raspberry Puree that makes the “lava”.  It is soooooooooo yummy and refreshing - $7.75
Lapu Lapu - UPDATE 2010 - If you want a hard hitting drink that comes in a pineapple, this is your drink.  After a day at the "dry" Magic Kingdom, getting your ankles sythed off by strollers, you need a drink, you deserve a drink.  This pineapple is for you!

EPCOT/FUTURE WORLD - Fountain View Cafe
I got a fruit croissant!
Look and weep with joy at its beauty! A flaky, buttery croissant, filled with creamy custard, topped with glazed fruit of strawberries, kiwis and blueberries and the whole thing dusted with powdered sugar. And if that isn't good enough, there are blueberries INSIDE THE CUSTARD! Let me just die now! $3.51 By the way - they lie. There is a sign saying that most pastries were not served after 10:30am. What it really means is they will serve until they are all sold. The fruit one is available all day though. GRADE: A-
UPDATE 2010:  This eatery has now changed to all ice cream and I have not been able to find this beauty anywhere.  I still cry a little at night.

EPCOT/WORLD SHOWCASE
EPCOT – MEXICO
Layered Margarita – too sweet for me.  This combo, lime/strawberry/mango/kiwi drink is from a machine rather than made from fresh fruit.  Tons of chemicals and not enough booze.  Looks pretty but you can get better drinks elsewhere.
UPDATE 2010: Margaritas & Tequilla in "The Ditch" - Mexico has opened a new tequilla bar.  A person on the DIS board coined the moniker "The Ditch" and I like it so I am using it.  I told all the cast members I could find about it.  It seems you walk into the ditch, find yourself trapped and then can't crawl out.  They have TONS of tequillas.  There are a variety of prices and even flights to try.  I would recommend just sipping and not using "Training Wheels" (salt & lime).  Margaritas are also available singly or in flights with such yummy flavors such as Prickly Pear, Blood Orange, Avocado & Cucumber.  These do NOT come out of a slushie machine and are well worth the money.  The cast members told me this bar evolved out of the 2009 Food & Wine Festival.  They were the most popular drink book 4 timers over so Disney smartly took advantage of that popularity.

EPCOT - CHINA
Lotus Blossom Cafe - yes, yes, I know - Friends do not let friends eat at the Lotus Blossom Cafe. I didn't. I drank. I had an iced plum tea. It was really nice. Fruity, refreshing, slightly sweet but not overpowering. $2.67 with tax.

EPCOT – NORWAY
Kringla Bakery - I LOVE this place. Let see, here is the hit parade thus far:
Lefse Bread $1.99. Think a very thin flour tortilla spread with butter, sprinkled with cinnamon and then rolled tightly. Nice pocket food for easy transportation. Not too sweet but a nice treat. Great for kids, not too messy, not full of processed crap.
Rice Cream - $2.29 - I LOVE THIS STUFF! cold white rice that is mixed with sweetened cream then topped with strawberries in strawberry sauce. I mix it all up so all the sweet creamy rice gets some of the strawberry and it is just heaven! The best sweet yummy in Epcot! Is it THAT good? You bet your sweet donkey it is!.
School Bread – I really want to like this.  I think that it is just a different texture than Americans are use to.  When you look at it you think of a Krispy Kreme donut covered in coconut.  The custard is really good, the coconut is good but the cake is not soft like a raised donut or even like a cake donut.  The cake is more dense and dry.  It is not sweet like an American donut.  As long as the custard holds out, fine but the bread by itself needed something.  Like I said, I think our American tastes are so skewered with too much sugar that this doesn’t work for us as much.  Europeans would probably like it better.
Cloudberry Horn – Very nice.  Not overly sweet but still nice.  A crispy pastry horn with large sugar crystals on the outside with cream piped inside.  Yummy.

EPCOT - ITALY
Rosa Regale – at La Bottega Italiana - this is the bright red sparkling wine that everyone is ga ga about. It is a deep, pure red with a nose and slight taste of roses. It is really lovely.  You can get this at BevMo (Beverages and More), some people have found it at Cost Plus and Costco. This sparkling wine is amazing.  $6

Cannolli – I am really picky with my cannolli.  I don’t put any neon fruit inside mine.  This cannolli taste wise was really rich and good.  The ricotta cheese was fresh and very creamy.  The only problem is the size vs. the price.  I think they should either be larger for the same price or same size but less money.  They are only about 3 inches long which is just not big enough.  Yes, it is about size. - $6
UPDATE 2010:  Someone was reading my mind and the cut the price to around $3.  I was unable to see the size since it was raining and the cart was closed but I will venture to say it is the same size only a reduced price.

EPCOT - GERMANY
Eiswein - this is a tiny taste (2 oz.) of German Ice Wine. It is very sweet but with a very clear edge. They give you a little 70% cocoa fine chocolate to eat with it. They should since this wine shot costs you $12.01 with tax. Remember that is TWO OUNCES. Regular wine glasses are 6-8 oz. I splurged. Was it worth $12 for that taste. Not really but it didn't suck either. Now I am waiting to break open my Canadian icewine.

EPCOT – MOROCCO
Baklava – this phyllo dough pastry with nuts and honey is always yummy.  At the back of the tangerine café you can get a choice between many different kinds.  Some less sticky, some with chocolate, some with crushed pistachio nuts (like the one below) but all good.

EPCOT – JAPAN
Kaki Gori – OK, they are snowcones and who doesn’t like a snowcone?  However their rainbow / 3 flavor one is the best.  Three strips of Tangerine, Honeydew Melon and Strawberry.  Total Yum!  The Melon especially was very refreshing on a hot day.  You can get the flavors seperatly  as well.

Sake, mmmmmm hot sake. Now this is a good buzz. Just don't pair it with Kaki Gori as the flavors don't mix. Kaki Gori is a Japanese snow cone.  YUMMY. So very refreshing. Just no sake with it. Have the sake later. It can be confusing because they are sold out of the same cart and if you get the sake first and start pounding sake’s you can be in a lot of trouble. I mean Cast Members pulling your donkey out of the lake trouble as you try to swim home.

EPCOT – FRANCE
I know people are all about the bakery here but I think the bakery in Norway WAAAYYY surpasses this one.  I find these offerings way too sweet for my taste.  I had the chocolate mousse here once and it was a bit dry and kinda nasty.
UPDATE 2010:  I did find the level of their pastries has gone up.  Their croissants (plain, chocolate and almond are all VERY good.  I also tried a long pastry filled with almond paste which was lovely.  As where their cream puffs.  I was still scared by my previous bad mousse experience and since I'm not that much into chocolate, I didn't miss it.  OK, I was so carried away by this chocolate croissant that I forgot to get a picture until it was half gone.

The wine shop did offer some nice cocktails like the Kir Royal and the Pomegranite Kir along with other champagne drinks.  I’ll take these over dry mousse any day.  However some red wine I cannot pronounce, (once again) tasted like ummmm, donkey. Why do I keep saying donkey? Because I can't say ass in a Disney blog. How do I know it tasted like donkey? Because if I was to guess what a donkey would taste like, I would point to this wine. AND it set me back $6.23 a glass. The whole French pavilion needs a trip to Napa to see what they are missing.

EPCOT - ENGLAND
Rose and Crown Pub - Guinness. That wonderful chewy breakfast beer, loaded with lots of good for you grains with a hint of malty chocolate flavor set me back $7.46 without tip. Our barkeep also poured a shamrock into the foam on top for good luck. ALSO, you can take your booze TO GO! Just like the French Quarter! ROCK ON! Just no flashing!

The Tea Caddy - Part of my quest for "weird candy" aka "candy we don't have here in 'Merica" (1)
Toffo, little bits of toffee. They are kind of like a Rolo without the chocolate only not as sweet. (2) Curly Wurl - mmmm, a twisty flat plait of caramel covered in Cadbury chocolate - yummy (3) Lion Bar - I have no idea. I haven't eaten it yet but the shop girl said it was really good and there are rice krispies in there so you can't go wrong. Each of these were $2.25 each. Shipping from England is pricey.

EPCOT – CANADA
I really wanted to try the ice wine but after the dinner from hell, my hopes of this faded as fast as Illumination fireworks.  The beaver tails are gone so all that is left to me is maple fudge which was again, too sweet.  What is a Beaver Tail?  Ahhhh, it is a paddle shaped plate of fried dough.  It is at least 8" long and about 6" wide and was shaped ... like a beaver tail.  It use to be fried fresh then topped with all kinds of things... powdered sugar, chocolate, strawberries & whipped cream, nutella, spiced apples.  They were lovely.  Then they had them pre-made and the cast members would run them through a little "easy bake oven" set-up.  They were not as good  They were kinda chewy and then they went away.  Look for them in a midwest county faire near you.

Jiko - Animal Kingdom Lodge

I usually always go to the Animal Kingdom on my first day at the World which means that evening I will hit Jiko for dinner since it is close.  No reason to go all the way out to AKL just for dinner.  Might as well hit it when we are at the park as well.  I have been to Jiko 5 times now.  I always enjoy myself enough to keep it in the must do rotation but it has never been number one overall.

I love Jiko. The hotel is beautiful and the dining is always special. I was stone cold sober today (and for the majority of the trip after the Tune-In Lounge incident) so I have better notes for this dinner.

1/4-1/3 of the tables had children dining. These ranged from high-chair to 10 years and all were well behaved. They were all enjoying themselves and the 2 year old even had the good manners not to scold his Dad when HE knocked his wine glass over and broke it on the floor.

For the Appetizer we had:

Maize and Sweet Potato "Tamales" - Herbed Maize Pudding and Trufffled Sweet Potato Mash, with Shredded Goat Cheese in Corn Husk Boat - $8
This was soooo yummy I can hardly describe it. The pudding was firm, almost like fine polenta in texture. The goat cheese gave the sweetness of the potatoes a tangy edge. I ate one and took the other one to go so I could save room for dessert. Grade: A-

Taste of Africa: Kalamata Olive Hummus, Moroccan Chermoula, and Malayan Spinach-Lentil Dip with Pappadam, whole wheat lavosh, and flax seed naan bread. - $9

If you are brave, this starter gives you some really new flavors to sample with various crackers/bread. I tried a few. The red one had a hot finish that my white breadish sensibilities needed to follow with some water. Not uber hot, just a little spicy. The others were an explosion of great flavors.   A-.

Bread with butter: I am mentioning this, though I don't have a picture because the butter was amazing. it was called Indian butter and was served with fresh baked wheat bread. The butter contained: ginger, garlic, cilantro, lime juice, brown sugar, salt and pepper along with a few other spices. AMAZING! Grade: A

Kenyan Coffee BBQ-Braised Beef Short Rib - with crushed Idaho and Sweet Potatoes and Onion-Garlic Sauce $29.00
Catwoman had the Beef Short Ribs.  They were fork tender, the coffee flavor made a rich, smokey flavor that melded with the beef.  The potatoes and garlic complemented the ribs without making it heavy.  B+

Pan-roasted Jumbo Scallops with golden brown mealie pap and spicy tomato-onion ChakaLaka $29.00
So if I couldn’t have the beef filet, then I would go in the opposite direction and have seafood.  The scallops were perfectly done and very tasty.  Soft, with the slight crunch of the sear and the cornmeal type topping.  I personally, prefer a lighter, more cream based type of sauce.  Something with garlic or curry or saffron.  The tomato was a little heavy for me but still a respectable dish – B

Berbere-braised Lamb Shank with Toasted Couscous, baby spinach and Berbere Sauce - $27
This was a favorite of many diners and those in our party. I did get a bite and the lamb was really good. It fell right off the bone. The only small thing he didn't like was he found the couscous a bit too moist for his taste. Still overall, he really liked this dish. Grade: B+

Pan-roasted and Maize-crusted Halibut with vegetables of the moment, tomato-butter sauce and crispy sweet potatoes - $30
This dish was wonderful. If it is on the menu on my next trip, I am ordering it. The breading was very, very light. Just a light crunch. The fish was moist and flaky. The sauce blended just well and the thin crispy strips of potato gave a nice texture to the dish. WONDERFUL! Grade: A

Wood Grilled Filet Mignon with Macaroni & Cheese and Red Wine Sauce - $34
One of these days, I'm going to order something else. However the last 3 trips, I've always had this dish for my entree and don't regret it. One of the best filets on property. So juicy, so tender, the white mac & cheese blend so well. The only downside is if it is oversauced (like the picture shows) the red wine reduction overpowers the meat and the delicate Mac & Cheese.  I had to liberated items to the side of the plate and the butter dish so they would not become encased in the sauced and then ruined.  Grade: A

Here is where I threw a temper tantrum.  The BEST dessert I have ever had at a resort was here.  Many moons ago.  Tanzanian Chocolate Purses with Van Der Hume Dipping Sauce.  I saw it was back on one of the menu’s that was sent into the All Ears website.  I was sooooo looking forward to it because it was like crack in a little bite sized nibble, only better.

They didn’t have it.  WTF!  AND to add insult to injury, Chef Annette was not there that night.  BUGGER!  I told the server I am marking them down just on principal because they get rid of the best dessert on property and keep these pedestrian ones, or arty things (like deconstructed banana split) or the just plain weird concoctions.

So I decide on this:

Apple Gateau - $8
It was basically a parfait.  And like Donkey says in Shrek, everyone loves a parfait.  But not when you want something else.  On it’s own, it was nice.   Slices of apple and cinnamon, layered with spiced whipped cream.  It was sweet, light and a very nice end to the meal.  It just wasn’t Tanzanian Chocolate Purses.   B

Expedition Everest Banana Split - $9
This has three kinds of ice cream. I believe chocolate, vanilla and coffee with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. As you can see, this is more like a "deconstructed" banana split. It looks very toney and there was no complaining so I can assume it was very good. Grade: A-

Fruit Napoleon with Sorbet - $9
I wasn't paying too much attention since I was still depressed from being denied my fav dessert. The sorbet was nice, i can't remember what kind it was. The fruit was good but the two slices of phyllo dough made this a bit difficult to eat. I remember there were kumquats in the fruit. A nice, light offering but not spectacular. (I know, I know, I'm bitter) Grade: B+
